These materials are selected where combinations of high-temperature capability, thermal stability, high purity and specialized physical or chemical properties are required. Individual materials offer different combinations of these characteristics, allowing the material grade and form to be matched to the specific operating environment and manufacturing process.

Molybdenum, for example, is widely used in high-temperature processing, semiconductor and electronics applications. Tantalum and niobium are used in selected high-temperature, chemical and electronic applications. The appropriate material depends on temperature, atmosphere, mechanical loading, chemical environment and required purity.
